Transport Integration
Spur to economic growth
Wider regional links will help to foster economic growth, jobs and prosperity in the region. CAMLINK envisages working in concert with regional and local decision-makers, such as EEDA, EERA and local authorities, through Cambridgeshire Horizons, to see how infrastructure improvements can help bring about such growth.
Promoting other sustainable forms of transport
CAM-LINK would work with these organisations and also other stakeholders in promoting sustainable forms of transport. Cycling facilities to, from and at train stations, would complement rail wherever possible as well as providing bicycle storage on trains themselves.
Dealing with other constraints
One of the most significant further constraints to the delivery of enhanced rail services in the region at present is the lack of power north of Cambridge to run more train services.
The development of a new settlement at Waterbeach will itself require investment in bringing more power to the area and it will be both feasible and cost-effective to extend this provision to the railway lines.
CAM-LINK’s remit extends to addressing this issue and other aspects of infrastructure investment.
Addenbrookes
Development at Addenbrookes requires better interchange at Cambridge Station. As well as contributing to this objective the improvements to Cambridge Station would, in addition, provide the capacity to introduce services calling at a new station serving Addenbrookes should this be needed in the future.
Financing
CAM-LINK builds upon rail, a proven transport system. It combines with and complements Park and Ride as well as Guided Busway technology. Public and private sector finance can be sourced to deliver CAM-LINK and its benefits.
